This marks the biggest win of his career to date. “I’ve been looking for a title, and this is it,” said Sigua. “Everyone here at Talking Stick Resort has greeted me with open arms.”

Emotional from the win, he immediately called his wife and mother, who he credits for the success. “My mom and wife are my biggest supporters,” said Sigua. “My wife encouraged me to keep going and not to work. She had faith in me which helped me stay optimistic.”

Four-time World Series of Poker champion, Tom Schneider served as the host throughout the championship, which in its 13^th year has continued to grow in popularity each year. The final 10 players earned their seat at the Finals by battling through the No Limit Hold ‘Em tournament which kicked off on Aug. 11 and a semi-finals round on Aug. 14.

The 2018 Arizona State Poker Championship has been canceled thanks to flooding and a subsequent power outage, the casino hosting the tournament said Monday.

The Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale is currently closed thanks to the Aug. 11 storm that knocked out the power. The casino plans to reopen this upcoming weekend, assuming the clean-up goes as planned. The 47-table poker room was forced to cancel the tournament after the first starting day thanks to the power outage. It previously hoped to delay the tournament.

The casino said that the storm created “serious water damage” to the main and backup power generators. Local officials called the storm last week a “monsoon.” Around 600 hotel guests at the casino had to be evacuated early Saturday when power went out.

The Arizona State Poker Championship kicked off Friday and was slated to run until the middle of this week. A prize pool of $553,000 had been generated when the event was suspended and then later canceled. The casino said it is refunding players.

Out of the 553 entries on day 1a on Friday, just 90 people had survived for day 2.

The $1,100 buy-in event drew nearly 1,700 players in 2017 and awarded a first-place prize of $265,706. A similar turnout was expected this summer.
